Remember This

Roman de la Rose, Dante Gabriel Rossetti

This is their last kiss.
His guardian angel watches
From the Other side of the fence and
Holds the book that tells the end
Of their story. The man
On bended knees does not feel the grass.
He is not aware of the passing time or
The fear that should course through his bones.
He only knows This, the final time he touches Home
With his body. Home’s hands, soft. Home’s curves
Beneath white dress never to house him again.
The skin of his woman with pink stars
In pale sky will not shudder when
He comes up from behind, puts lips on neck.
He will be gone.
